Afandou Rhodes, Rodos, Rhodos.
Afandou village is situated about 20 kilometers away of the town of Rhodes, on the east coast of the island, with easy access to its 7km long beach. The village was founded in the days when pirates were ravaging the Mediterranean. It is said that the village owes its name to the location where it was built. A place behind a hill and away from the beach that was invisible (“afando” in Greek) from the sea. In Afandou the houses are dazzling white with interiors decorated with dozens of Rhodian ceramics and embroideries.
Afandou, the second largest village after Ialyssos (Trianta) with 6500 inhabitants, offers a variety of facilities and attractions, combining cosmopolitan with authentic Greek way of life. The long beach of Afandou and its crystal clear waters is one of the major attractions. Along the beach you will find cantinas, children playgrounds, water sports and sun beds. Here is located the only golf course on the island.
Unlike the beach of Faliraki, the waterfront of Afandou beach is completely unspoilt and accessible as there not any hotels built here. The best part is considered to be along the north side, also called Traganou beach, surrounded by some suggestive rocky hills. The type of the beach varies. For the most part it is covered by a small pebble used also in the construction of the decorated yard floors. The beach is regularly awarded with a Blue Flag.
